CLIMATE + METHANE

Let's put time on our side

In the race to bend the climate curve, methane mitigation must be a priority. We and our partners are on the path to deliver a Gigaton-scale climate win by 2030 which will buy much needed time for other GHG mitigation strategies.

Don't let size fool you...

Not all greenhouse gases are created equal

Though methane is shorter lived and less abundant than CO2, methane is over 80 times more effective at trapping heat in the atmosphere in the short term. *

Not only have methane emissions been growing rapidly over recent decades, but new evidence indicates that wildfires are helping methane stay in the atmosphere even longer. *

What's in a burp?

As they digest food, ruminant animals like cattle, buffalo, sheep, and goats, produce enteric methane, most of which they release into the atmosphere through burping.

Enteric methane accounts for up to 30% of global methane emissions from human activities, making agriculture the single largest source of anthropogenic methane emissions.

Creating a will and a way

The 2021 Global Methane Pledge, signed by over 120 countries representing more than two thirds of global GDP, means that methane is firmly on the international public policy agenda.

Which sectors deserve the most attention? All of them, of course, but our work paves the way to move from intention to action to meaningful impact. Reduction of enteric methane is a “now” opportunity for policymakers, governments, food producers, and investors who want to address global methane with proven solutions available today.

We're for sustainable agriculture

Policymakers can help make enteric methane mitigation a win now, using the right combinations of policy levers.

  • Invest in climate tech R&D
  • Subsidize adoption of methane mitigation solutions
  • Set mandatory targets backed by investment in R&D, education, and subsidies

In some jurisdictions, policymakers put primary emphasis on carbon taxation, putting an undue burden on food producers working hard to meet consumer demand.

In our experience, most food producers and farmers are already actively looking for ways to be more sustainable. That’s why we advocate policy approaches that empower and support food producers rather than penalize them.

The power of the plate

It’s not just policymakers who influence climate action. Globally, sustainability has a growing influence on people’s food purchasing behavior and attitudes, and they vote with their wallets. Plus, younger consumers are even more ready to pay for sustainable products.

The majority of people say they’ll purchase a packaged food item with a sustainability claim.

In multiple regions across the globe, this majority represents a double-digit point increase since 2019.

Enabling producers and farmers to produce food that’s aligned with consumer preferences and provides added value is just one of the many benefits of our proven methane-reducing solutions.
